Create a video and upload it to YouTube

A video is a great way to introduce yourself to your class and to present course material throughout the quarter. After you have created your video, you can upload it to YouTube and caption it using the tools built in to YouTube. Next, you can get the code to insert the YouTube video into Canvas and Etudes. You can also add a link to your video in your Course Summary which is a great way to introduce your course to anyone browsing the catalog.

Record your video

To record a video, you can use your smartphone or if you have a webcam on your computer, you can use software on your computer to record a video. For example, you can use iMovie on a Mac or Dell Webcam Central on PC. You can also use Screencast-o-matic or Camtasia.

Screencast-o-matic free version gives you:
  • 15 minute recordings
  • Screen & webcam recording
  • Publish to YouTube (create captions in YouTube)
  • Save as video file
Camtasia: Costs $99 (free trial for 30 days)

After you have your recording, you can upload it to YouTube. Some software allows you to upload it directly into YouTube from within the software.

Add narration to PowerPoint and save it as a video

  1. Add narration to your PowerPoint presentation (Microsoft)
  2. Turn your presentation into a video (Microsoft)
  3. Upload your video to your YouTube channel where it will be auto-captioned. Note that it can take several days for the auto-captions to be generated. Make sure to verify the accuracy of the captions. Luckily, you can easily edit them from within your YouTube channel. Continue to the next tab to learn how.

After you have a YouTube account, it is really easy to upload your videos to YouTube once you are logged in.

Sign in/create a YouTube account

  • Sign in to YouTube (button located on the upper right)
  • You must have a Google account before you can access YouTube. Click the 'Create an account' link at the bottom to create an account, if you do not already have one, otherwise, log in.

Upload your video from YouTube

After you have logged in to YouTube, you can easily upload your video by clicking on the upload button.

  1. Click the 'Upload' button located on the upper right

  1. Click the 'Select files to upload' up arrow and select the video from your computer
  2. Select privacy setting, Public, Unlisted, Private (learn more about privacy settings)

Upload your video from Screencast-o-matic to YouTube

In Screencast-o-matic:
  • After you are done recording the video, click 'Done'
  • Select 'Upload to YouTube'. You will be prompted to launch a browser window where you will log in to your YouTube account and be asked to share your YouTube credentials with Screencast-o-matic.
    • If you do NOT wish to share your information with Screencast-o-matic, you can select 'Save As Video File' to download the video and then from YouTube you can upload the file to your channel.
In YouTube:
  • If you have a file with captions you can upload it to YouTube (Add captions to your YouTube video)
  • If you don't have a file with captions you can let YouTube create captions for you automatically. This can take up to a day so check back to see if your video has been auto-captioned. Once they have been added make sure to verify that they are accurate! (Edit or remove captions)

Upload your video from Camtasia to YouTube

In Camtasia:
  • Choose the automatic upload to Youtube
  • Export the caption file in Camtasia (edit -> captions -> export captions)
In YouTube:

Verify privacy settings

Make sure the privacy settings is set to either 'Unlisted' or 'Public'. If you set it to 'Private', you will not be able to share it which means you won't be able to use it in Canvas or Course Information.

Back in YouTube, find your video

  1. Click on the menu icon located at the top next to YouTube
  2. Click on My channel
  3. Click on the Video Manager located across the top of the channel art header

If your video is Private, you will see a lock next to it. Click on it to change the privacy settings. Make sure to select Unlisted or Public.

Using a transcript

If you have a transcript of your video you can upload it and use the editor to make adjustments to the text and timing.

Get link or embed code

There are several ways to share a YouTube video. You can share the link, email it, or copy the embed code into a webpage so that the video may be viewed directly on the page.

Find the YouTube video and then click on it. If you are in your YouTube channel, click on the video from within the Video Manager. Below the video, click the Share link located in the social media bar.

  • Click on the Share arrow
  • Click on Share
  • Copy the code from the box into the buffer. If it is not highlighted, select the code and then copy it into the buffer (Mac: command c, PC: ctrl c)

  • Copy the code from the box into the buffer. If it is not highlighted, select the code and then copy it into the buffer (Mac: command c, PC: ctrl c)
  • If you do not wish to show suggested videos after the video has been viewed, uncheck the box next to 'Show suggested videos when the video finishes. The embed code will be updated so copy the code into the buffer.

Insert video into Canvas

There are two ways to add a video in to Canvas. You can insert a link to the video or add the embed code.

First way: Add link to YouTube video

You can embed a video directly into Canvas by adding it as a link. Canvas will create a thumbnail that, when clicked, will expand to show the video with the player bar.

  1. In Canvas, edit the page where you would like to add the video.
  2. Make sure you have copied the link to the video into the buffer because it is going to be pasted into the link.
  3. Place the cursor where you would like to add the video
  4. Click the Link button icon. In the popup window, paste the link into the box and click 'Insert Link'.

When you save the changes, Canvas will embed the video as a thumbnail which can then be viewed directly from the Canvas page.

Second way: Add the YouTube video embed code

You can add the embed code that you copied from YouTube with the Insert/edit Media icon located in the editor toolbar. When you save the page Canvas will display the player controls, ready to be viewed, no thumbnail.

  1. Copy the embed code for your YouTube video
  2. In Canvas, click on the Insert/edit media icon located in the RCE toolbar.

  3. To resize the player, click on General and enter a width or height. Make sure the box is checked to constrain proportions.
  4. Click Ok

Insert introduction video into Course Information

Create a short video to introduce yourself to your class. Studies have shown that this humanizing experience increases retention. Add this video to Course Information wiki where anyone browsing the catalog will see it.

Get the link from your YouTube video. To find the link, click on your YouTube video then click on the Share link in the social media bar. In the box that appears below the social media bar, click Share. Highlight the link to the video and copy it into the buffer (Mac: command c, pc: ctrl c).

Edit the Course Information wiki and add a link to your introduction YouTube video. A great place to add the link is on your name.
