Biography:

Sarah Parikh is a professor at Foothill College teaching a variety of courses in the Physics and Engineering Departments and is currently the Department Chair for the Engineering Department. She has led initiatives to foster sense of community at Foothill College including the STEM Newsletter, STEM Day, STEM Showcase, the Engineering Speaker Series, and the Leadership Lunch speaker series. She is advisor to Foothill's Women in STEM (WiSTEM) student club.

Sarah's research interests include: engineering pathways to, through, and beyond community college; the development of belonging and identity as an engineering student and engineer; and measures of success for community college transfer programs.

Sarah's teaching methodology balances meeting students where they are and encouraging student accountability. Her lectures are highly interactive with discussions, debates, and small group, large group, and individual activities. Each of Sarah’s courses includes a project as well. She aims for authentic projects that are based on a topic of the student's choice. Ultimately, Sarah designs her courses to align with the quote by E. Eisner "The point of learning anything in school is not primarily to enable one to do well in school – although most parents and students believe this to be the case – it is to enable one to do well in life."

Professor Parikh has a Ph.D. from Stanford University in Mechanical Engineering, studying Engineering Education. Students taking Professor Parikh's courses can expect interactive lectures with discussions and activities in small groups. Each of Professor Parikh's courses has a project. Outside of class, Professor Parikh enjoys cooking, reading, and taking her kids to the park. Her goal is to support and inspire all students to achieve their goals in school and in life.
