With 20+ years of experience in tax I have a lot to share with my students! I started with a small CPA firm in Bay Area CA as a staff associate, grew into Corporate Tax Manager with one of the Big Four accounting firms and currently work as Head of Global Tax of a Public multi-national Corporation here in Silicon Valley. I have in depth knowledge of individual and small business income tax compliance and planning as well as current federal, state and international corporate income tax and tax accounting knowledge. My hands-on experience in preparation of ALL tax returns and forms utilizing various tax software packages (Lacerte, TurboTax, H&R Block At Home, ProSystems, GoSystems, OneSource) and working knowledge of various on-line tax research tools (RIA, BNA, CCH) have contributed to my fast track career progress.
My approach in teaching this course is to prepare students for entering a competitive modern work force and building a successful career in tax. Learning and mastering tax software package while working on tax return homework assignments is part of the challenge in my class. An entry level position in tax does require a tax software knowledge nowadays. As soon as your learn one tax software package any other software will be a breeze. The tax software on-line labs and weekly tax return homework discussion forums are part of the learning process in this class. The federal tax law theory students learn in this course is solidified by the hands-on tax form preparation experience through completion of cumulative individual federal tax return assignment due at the end of week 2, 5 and 8. Starting week 9 students learn fundamentals of California tax and work on California individual tax return assignment. Tax preparer ethics topics are covered in week 11 of this course.
I encourage my students to participate in "after the test" discussions. Historically, students find these discussions being very helpful. During the "after the test" discussions students not only have an opportunity to get an explanation for the correct answers they missed on the test, but, also to share "best practices" for taking on-line tests. Again, these are critical skills for students who are planning to get certified as a CPA or EA in the future. Both certifications are obtained through a series of rigorous on-line tests. Therefore, I believe it is crucial for my students to start mastering on-line test taking skills from the beginning of this course.
Upon completion of this course with grade "C" or higher each student will get a certificate with their name and CTEC ID. The certificate in pdf file format will be emailed to each student individually.
The CTEC provider (Foothill College) has up to 45 days to process the certificates. After you get your certificate, you are still not "registered" as a CTEC tax preparer (CRTP). The certificate only provides you the permission to register as one at the CTEC website, provided you get bonded. Please plan accordingly.
Please note that this course is both a "Qualifying" CTEC course AND a CPE (Continuing Professional Education) CTEC course.
