Announces Auditions for 

 

Music – Jazz and Pop standards from the 1920-30s
Book by Woody Allen

Bullets Over Broadway based on the hit 1994 film about a about a young playwright whose first Broadway play is financed by a gangster. The 1920s come roaring to life with showgirls, gangsters and more in this musical adaptation of the Woody Allen's madcap film. This six-time Tony-nominated musical features existing hits from the 1920s, including "Let's Misbehave," "'Tain't Noody's Biz-ness If I Do" and "There's a New Day Comin'!" Bullets over Broadway is a love letter to the Golden Age of Broadway, filled with unforgettable songs that audiences remember and love.

Rehearsal Schedule:

Music rehearsals begin Jan 7th, 2019

Tues/Wed/Thurs evenings + Sat & Sun afternoons / Expanded schedule tech through opening

Please prepare a short, (1-2 min), song in the style of the show, songs from the show acceptable. Bring sheet music in your key. An accompanist will be provided. Please bring a headshot and resume. NO APPT NECESSARY.

All roles are open. A Multi-Ethnic/Multi-Racial cast of 16-18 adults.

Character Descriptions

Principal Characters

David Shayne (Lead): Male, 25-35: an aspiring playwright who is determined to protect the integrity of his artistic vision. He lives with his girlfriend, Ellen, in bohemian Greenwich Village; exceptional comedic actor who sings well; baritenor; principal.

 Helen Sinclair (Lead): Female, 30-45: a world-renowned actress, hasn’t had a hit in a very long time, grand and flamboyant, has been recruited by David Shayne for the lead in his play; soprano belter; principal.

Olive Neal: Female, 20-30: the chorus girl girlfriend of mob boss Nick Valenti, Olive’s dream is to become a real actress. Unfortunately she has no talent. Comedic actress must dance; belter.

Cheech: Male, 25-35: hit man for mob boss Nick Valenti, has been told to keep an eye on Olive Neal during rehearsals. There he discovers his own talent as an artist, and rewrites David Shayne’s play to much success. Must move well; baritone.

Ellen: Female, 20-30: the loyal, but long suffering girlfriend of David Shayne; an artist herself, a maker of ceramics. Tired of being taken for granted by David, Ellen starts an affair with their mutual friend; high belt.

Julian Marx: Male, 50-60: a veteran Broadway producer of David Shayne’s play. In exchange for money needed to mount the production, Julian agrees to cast Nick Valenti’s untalented girlfriend Olive in the show; baritone.

Nick Valenti: Male, 40-50: a New York mob boss, and boyfriend of Olive Neal. Keeping good on his promise to make her a star, Nick has agreed to put up the money for David Shayne’s play with the condition that Olive is cast in the show; baritone.

Eden Brent: Female, 25-35 an aggressively perky actress. Her tiny dog, Mr. Woofles, is her constant companion, speaks in Pig-Latin. Comedic actress; soprano, moves well.

Warner Purcell: Male, 35-45: an esteemed theater actor, as well as a compulsive over eater; has embarked on a very dangerous affair with Olive Neal; comedic actor, tenor, must move well.

Ensemble Characters

Ensemble (Chorus / Ensemble): Males & Females, 18-40:

very strong singers/dancers; and tap dancers some of which will also play:

• Atta-girls (6) Gangsters (6) featured singers and dancers in Nick Valenti’s club.
• Aldo: A henchman of Nick Valenti
• Kay: a bohemian friend of David and Ellen.
• Mitchell Sabine: The stage manager of David’s play
• Rocco: another member of Nick’s gang.
• Sheldon Flender: a friend of both David & Ellen. Passionate, values art over life
• Hot Dog Man
• The Four Franks male actors dressed as hot dogs.

Parking at Auditions:  Closest parking to auditions is in Student Lot 1, immediately to your right as you enter the Foothill College Campus. There is a $3 parking fee in the lots at all times; permits are available from machines in the lots. If you are cast in the production, you will be given a free parking permit. Foothill College is located at I-280 and El Monte Road, in Los Altos Hills.
