INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE

- Description: Live performance in an electronic age-an overview of the status of live theatre, including its historical, cultural, and spiritual roots. Focuses on the relationship of theatre to various cultures throughout history and on the contributions of significant individual artists. Introduces the elements of the production process, including play writing, acting, directing, design, and criticism. A survey of different periods, styles, and genres of theatre through play reading, discussion, films, and critiquing live theatre. Required attendance at live theatre performances.

AUDITIONING FOR THEATRE

- Description: Students will be introduced to a variety of auditioning scenarios and strategies. With a focus on stage techniques, the course will explore the practical application of audition theories. Topics will include monologues for general auditions, building a repertoire, preparing video auditions, strategies for cold readings and improvisation situations. Students will be introduced to theories of preparation and etiquette as well as the use of informational resources.

Footnote: Class held in Room 4301 on Wednesday 7/19, and 7/26, from 8:00-11:00am and Wednesday 8/2, 8/30 and 9/6 from 8:00 - 10:00am. Each student will be assigned one 3-hour lab session in Room 5305 on Thursday 7/27 between 8am-3pm and one 3-hour clinic visit to be assigned. Lab and clinic visits will be assigned the first week of class. All students will complete 18 hours of instruction. To complete the required clinical visitation, all course participants will need to present proof of Covid vaccination on the first day of class.

INDEPENDENT STUDY IN THEATRE ARTS

- Description: Provides an opportunity for the student to expand their studies in Theatre Arts beyond the classroom by completing a project or an assignment arranged by agreement between the student and instructor. The student is required to contract with the instructor to determine the scope of assignment and the unit value assigned for successful completion. Students may take a maximum of 6 units of Independent Study per department.
