HONORS PUBLIC SPEAKING

- Description: Introduction to the analysis of the history of rhetoric and public address; application of principles of public address to the preparation and delivery of public speeches in front of a live audience. Particular attention is paid to development of oral communication and listening skills. The honors section provides accelerated students with additional academic challenge in the areas of research, discussion, and intellectual exploration of ideas. Expanded opportunities include, but are not limited to, in-depth examination of speech text within historical context, self-reflection speeches and papers, creative individual and group projects, historical oral interpretation, and enrichment activities.

GENDER, COMMUNICATION & CULTURE

- Description: A comparative and integrative study of the interactive relationship between communication, gender, and culture in American society. Emphasis on the multiple ways communication in interpersonal relationships, educational institutions, organizations, media, and society in general creates and perpetuates gender roles. Analysis of gendered histories, traditions, and practices which normalize certain expectations, values, meanings and patterns of behavior across cultural/racial lines (Asian Americans, African Americans, European Americans, Latino Americans, Native Americans, Gays, Lesbians, Bisexual and Transgendered peoples).

INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

- Description: A comparative and integrative study of intercultural communication in American society. Analysis of cultural histories, cultural concepts, language, ethnic perspectives, perceptions, symbols and roles as they facilitate or hinder effective verbal and nonverbal interaction across cultural lines. Examination of cultural identities which influence thinking and behavior, such as race, class, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, nationality, age, appearance and physical ability.
