Theme: Absurdities, Atrocities, Madness, and Love
Our main work, the satire Candide, by Voltaire, examines absurdities, atrocities, syphilis and love, among other things,
but I didn’t want to put the word syphilis in our theme title. We will be examining
this novella for what it reveals about the human condition, but also what it can tell
us about contemporary problems and conundrums. Before we get to that, though, we will
begin by reading short short stories in the collection Sudden Fiction Latino, familiarizing ourselves with Magical Realism, and other literary styles and trends,
practicing analyzing symbols, and looking for patterns of meaning in literary texts.
Song lyrics, poems, short stories and a play or a movie script will give us other
opportunities to practice deciphering literary works. At least one of your essays
will involve independent research.

Theme: Becoming
College students are on a journey of self-discovery, which is both stressful and challenging,
but also exciting, so we will be shining a light down this path that lies ahead of
you, using our full-length work, Becoming Dr. Q. as a springboard. This book is the coming-of-age and career-discovery memoir of
Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa, who started out working in his father's gas station
at age 5 in Mexico, and is now an American brain surgeon, studying cancers of the
brain with the hope that he and his team can improve patient outcomes.
We will also examine ways that natural human tendencies can interfere with accurate
assessment of reality, learn about Growth Mindset, and study various types of lying,
causes of rumor spread, and in the process gain some tools for being more media literate.
Your last essay will be a Research Rogerian Argument about Artificial Intelligence
and the Final Exam will be an essay about the entire book, Becoming Dr. Q: My Journey from Migrant Farm Worker to Brain Surgeon.
