- Description: Oral and written practice in the minimum competencies in language functions: vocabulary essential to basic communicative situations, grammar necessary for carrying out functions, signals for carrying out communicative tasks, and cultural skills in specific situations. Introduction to Hiragana, Katakana and about 80 Kanji.

- Description: Further development of material presented in JAPN 1 & 2. Oral and written practice in competencies in language functions: vocabulary essential to daily communicative situations, grammar necessary for carrying out various functions, signals for carrying out communicative tasks, and cultural skills in specific situations. Distinguishing formal and informal styles, and using honorifics. Making suppositions. Additional 120 Kanji pronunciation and recognition.
- Prerequisite: JAPN 2 or equivalent.
