Emerging Technologies Institute

About ETI at Foothill College

As the first institution to offer totally online credit classes since 1995, Foothill College established the Emerging Technologies Institute (ETI) in the Summer of 2022 for interested faculty and staff to address how rapidly changing technology advancements can impact  education and enhance more immersive student learning experiences.

Originally called the Foothill College Metaverse Institute, the name was changed to ETI in April 2023 to encompass the everchanging technology landscape.

All ETI programs are by default interdisciplinary and campuswide — promoting equity, diversity and inclusion through tools and activities that invite and encourage participation from under-represented communities for all our Emerging Technology initiatives and programs.

Overview

Mission

  • To continue Foothill’s legacy of leadership in educational technology by exploring new and emerging technologies which lend added value to teaching and learning.

Scope

  • Explore emerging technologies
  • Identify those technologies with potential or known impact to education
  • Train and test these technologies in our labs
  • Make recommendations as to whether these technologies should be incorporated on the Foothill College Roadmap
  • For those that are added to the Foothill Technology Roadmap, identify campuswide communication and training, as needed.

Contact Us

ETI programs are coordinated through our STEM Division, in partnership with college leadership and all academic programs at Foothill and our broader community.

Konstantin Kalaitzidis, program coordinator for the STEM Center, and Zachary Cembellin, interim dean for the STEM Division, serve as co-coordinators for ETI.

Technologies and Labs

Currently there are 3 technology programs with active labs, including Virtual Reality (VR); Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Cymatics, along with 4 exploratory emerging technologies hosted in our Prototype Lab — Renewable Energy, Blockchain, Quantum Computing, and Space Sciences.

Explore our programs listed below to learn more about these technologies and our labs where students can experience these innovative tools.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Lab

Artificial intelligence leverages computers and machines to mimic the problem-solving and decision-making capabilities of the human mind. The AI Lab is where we explore machine learning and robotics.

Cymatics

Cymatics Lab

The Cymatics Lab is where we explore how music and sound, math, and physics work together to create cymatics, which is the study of sound and vibration made visible, typically on the surface of a plate, diaphragm or membrane.
