On-Campus Employment

Employment is considered on-campus only if it is on the campus of the school/university that issued your I-20. Generally, international students are able to find part-time positions at the bookstore, library, cafeteria or other offices at Foothill College.

Eligibility and Limitations

International students are eligible for on-campus employment two weeks after the beginning of their first quarter of enrollment at Foothill College.  You must also be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units (with 1 online class), and be in lawful F-1 immigration status.

You are permitted to work on-campus up to a maximum of 19 hours per week.

Summer Employment Rules

F-1 students employed on-campus during the Spring term:
  • You are allowed to continue your employment up to 19 hours per week during the summer session. Summer registration is optional.
F-1 students NOT employed on-campus during the Spring term:
  • You are required to enroll in a minimum 6 units in the Summer in order to be employed on-campus for a maximum of 19 hours per week during the summer session.
  • You must meet with the Immigration Officer in the International Office to discuss working on-campus during the time period between the end of the summer session and the first day of the Fall term.

Procedure Before Starting an On-Campus Job — Without an SSN

International students who do not currently have a Social Security Number (SSN) need to complete all of the following steps before beginning on-campus employment:

  1. Secure an on-campus job. You may visit offices and departments individually to inquire if they have any positions open. You can also consult Career Services in Room 8300.
  2. Once you are offered a job, ask the employing department/office to issue you a letter that verifies your employment. Your name on this letter must be the exact same name that appears on your I-20. The letter must be signed by your immediate supervisor, must be an original printed on Foothill College letterhead, and should follow a specific format outlined in the sample letter. A sample letter can be obtained from the Financial Aid Office or from the International Student Office.
  3. Bring the letter issued by the employing department/office at Foothill to the International Student Office in Room 1933 and request a "Social Security Letter" to be issued by the ISO. To issue this letter, we will verify whether you are in lawful F-1 immigration status. New students: Please wait for 2 weeks after the beginning of your first quarter at Foothill to request the "Social Security Letter" from the International Student Office.
  4. Apply for a Social Security Number once you obtain the two letters mentioned above. Please follow specific instructions for SSN application.
  5. Obtain a receipt from the Social Security Administration Office verifying that you have submitted your SSN application. Bring this receipt along with all other required documents to the Financial Aid Office and complete a student employment packet. It generally takes about two weeks to receive the Social Security Card by mail. As soon as you receive your card, you must show it to the Financial Aid office to be added to Foothill's payroll and start getting paid.
  6. After you receive the Social Security Card you must bring the SS Card and some of the forms from the student employment packet you received at the Financial Aid Office back to the International Student Office for approval.
  7. Upon approval, you must return the forms to Financial Aid. Also, the International Student Advisor will initial page 2 of the employment packet and give you a copy of page 2. You must bring a copy of page 2 to the supervisor at your new office.
  8. Read and sign the assignment card given to you by the Financial Aid office. Then the card needs to be signed by your immediate supervisor and brought back to Financial Aid.
