English for Second Language Learners

ESLL Credit Program

Foothill College offers five levels of academic English for non-native speakers, including credit and non-credit classes.

Our four levels of credit courses (3-6) are for students who wish to complete a two-year degree or vocational certificate at Foothill College or to transfer to a four-year college or university.

ESLL 26 Advanced Reading & Composition

Course is fully equivalent to ENGL 1A and transferable to both UC and CSU systems.

ESLL 125 Composition & Reading
and
ESLL 249 Advanced Reading 

Sequence Requirement: Level 5 core courses may be taken concurrently. Download the ESLL FAQs (PDF) if you have already completed ESLL 125.

NOTE: After successfully completing ESLL 125 and ESLL 249, you are eligible to register for ENGL 1A.

ESLL 236 Advanced Grammar
and
ESLL 237 Basic Composition Skills

Sequence Requirement: Level 4 core courses may be taken concurrently. Both classes must be completed and successfully passed before moving to the next level.

Level 4 classes also have non-credit sections available.

ESLL 226 High-Intermediate Grammar
and
ESLL 227 High-Intermediate Reading Skills

Sequence Requirement: Level 3 core courses may be taken concurrently. Both classes must be completed and successfully passed before moving to the next level.

Level 3 classes also have non-credit sections available.

 

ESLL Support Courses

Sequence Requirement

These courses are designed to support students taking ESLL 237, 25, 26 or English 1A or English 1B. Support courses are not required to be taken in sequence.

ESLL Non-Credit Courses

Levels 1 and 2 are fully non-credit courses for students who want to improve their basic speaking, listening and grammar skills.
