9:30-10 a.m. Opening Ceremony with Keynote Speaker, Dr. Camilla Hawthorne, in Dining Hall

Meet Camilla Hawthorne

Camilla Hawthorne (she/they),  is associate professor of Sociology and Critical Race & Ethnic Studies at UC Santa Cruz; faculty affiliate of the Science & Justice Research Center and the Legal Studies Program at UCSC; co-founder of the Black Geographies Lab; and also serves as program director and faculty member for the Black Europe Summer School in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Camilla’s work addresses the racial politics of migration and citizenship and the insurgent geographies of the Black Mediterranean. She is co-editor of the 2021 volume The Black Mediterranean: Bodies, Borders, and Citizenship (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021) and author of Contesting Race and Citizenship: Youth Politics in the Black Mediterranean (Cornell University Press, 2022).

Camilla received a PhD in Geography and Science & Technology Studies from UC Berkeley in 2018.

  • You can attend presentation sessions on the hour throughout the day, beginning at 10 a.m.
  • Morning and afternoon sessions will be hybrid: available on campus and in Zoom 
  • We invite you to sample individual projects, explore themes, or absorb the event from morning to evening.
  • While we encourage you to attend multiple sessions and see the full range of research, service, and creative arts projects that participants have developed, the RSLS is an open event.
  • You may "room hop" to see individual presentations. We invite you to make room in your schedule for the full day, or just an hour.
  • Livestream viewing of presentations across campus

Noon–1 p.m. Poster Sessions & Art Gallery Showcase in Dining Hall

  • Preview the Official RSLS 2023 Program Schedule [Available May 12] for a complete program with listed poster topics and art gallery items!

Noon–2 p.m. Lunch in Campus Center Plaza

  • Get fuel for the day with a free, catered lunch!
  • Continue viewing presentations, posters, and art

2 –6 p.m. Zoom Presentations

  • Preview the Official RSLS 2023 Program Schedule [Available May 12] for a complete program with listed presentations!
  • In the later afternoon, all presentations will be taking place virtually in Zoom.
  • You can attend Zoom presentation sessions on the hour, beginning at 2 p.m.

6:30 –7 p.m. Campus Celebration in Smithwick Patio

  • Foothill Beats Drumming [Smithwick Theater Courtyard]
  • Enjoy drinks, appetizers and desserts with friends, family, and community.

7 p.m.-8 p.m. Awards Ceremony

  • Celebrate the full day of presentations with our evening Awards Ceremony, during which we will honor 5 of the most impactful project presentations and 3 poster/gallery projects with the RSLS Judges' Award.
  • We will also recognize 5 additional projects selected by you, the audience, with a Viewers' Choice Award.

  • You can vote for the presentations that "speak" to you.
