Foothill College Celebrates International Education Week
Closing Event Postponed to Nov. 305 p.m. Foothill's Got Talent
|
International Education Week (IEW), held Nov. 13-16, is a joint effort between the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. Foothill College has planned a series of speaking events and film screenings for students and the community to learn about opportunities at home and abroad for becoming global citizens.
**All events will be held in Hearthside Lounge (Room 2313)**

Tuesday, Nov. 13
12 p.m. Life of a Diplomat — Dorothy Ngutter
Dorothy Ngutter is the State Department’s current representative to UC Berkeley. She assumed her duties as Diplomat in Residence
for the Northwest Region in August 2016. One of 16 Diplomats in Residence across the
country, Dorothy provides guidance and advice on careers, internships, and fellowships
with the State Department to students and professionals throughout the northwest region.
Dorothy earned a dual Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Communication Studies from Northeastern University in Boston, and holds a Master of Art in Law & Diplomacy (MALD) from The Fletcher School at Tufts University. She joined the Foreign Service, after completing the Thomas R. Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship in Ankara, Turkey (2012-2015), where she worked on a range of foreign policy issues. Before heading to Turkey, she served as a special assistant to Ambassador William J. Burns in the Office of the Under Secretary for Political Affairs, covering Africa and global issues (2010-2011).

2 p.m. Film Screening: From the Land of GandhiA different look at immigration. Focusing on highly skilled migrants, Director Prakash Wadhwa presents a story of a humble request, a moral obligation, and a story of U.S. Immigrant’s dreams. Followed by a Q & A. |

11 a.m. International Service Learning: Global Citizenship at FoothillHear from those involved in clubs and programs that tackle issues such as social entrepreneurship, anthropology, health, finance, and service leadership on a global scale. Learn how you can get involved! |

1 p.m. Global literacy and rural empowerment in South Asia
Naita Chialvo, deputy director of READ Global, overseeing a wide range of strategic
responsibilities including marketing, fundraising, programs, finance and operations.
READ Global establishes community library and resource centers (READ Centers) by partnering with rural communities in South Asia, where a majority of women are illiterate, and most families live below the poverty line. All READ Centers are owned and operated by the local community. Each Center has a library, computer room, women’s section, children’s room and training hall. READ Global connects with local partners to offer trainings in education, economic empowerment, technology and women’s empowerment.
Naita is passionately committed to improving livelihoods and education to address the grand challenges of poverty and international development. Prior to joining READ Global, Naita served as assistant director of The Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia program, overseeing programs across 20 countries. Earlier in her career, Naita also managed and supported the professional development of teaching candidates with Stanford’s Teacher Education Program (STEP) connecting teaching candidates with veteran mentor teachers across the Bay Area. Naita’s diverse experiences include teaching on the island of Ailinglaplap in the Republic of the Marshall Islands and managing large institutional investment portfolios with Mellon Capital Management. She received her B.A. in economics and M.A. in peace education from the United Nations-mandated University for Peace in Costa Rica.
Thursday, Nov. 15
12 p.m. Nature as a Classroom
Ramnath Chandrasekhar has traveled the length and breadth of India since his middle
school days to photo-document its natural and cultural heritage. This 16-year journey
taught him leadership and stewardship of the natural world. He believes that ‘nature
is a classroom without boundaries’. Through pictures and short video clips, he will
take us on a journey from the rainforests of the Western Ghats Mountains to the high
peaks of the Himalayas, and, from along the River Ganges to remote corners of India’s
far North East. These will be connected to the need for reimagining ways we learn
about nature and take part in conservation through service learning, for a sustainable
planet for us (which includes forests and wildlife), and for our future generations.
This one-hour session will include the talk followed by an interaction with the students.
3:30 p.m. Film Screening: Without a NetDirector Kelly J. Richardson's film follows four young acrobats in Rio who are striving to keep balance atop an extremely fine line. Q&A to follow. |
