Resumes are an important part of any internship or scholarship application. Here are some key tips to follow as you prepare your own resume.
- Start with making a list of the most significant experiences you have gone through up to this point.
- You can list any achievements in the fields of academics, internships, jobs, athletics, community service, and school activities. Distinguish the experiences that helped you learn the most or motivated you the most.
Curate Your List
- Check out that list you just brainstormed - what are the most relevant experiences and skills?
- Resumes that target specific job requirements are the most effective.
- Do not be discouraged if you don't have experience relevant to the job you're applying for. Instead, emphasize your relevant and transferrable skills with your related side projects and then include a strong cover letter that explains why you're the right candidate.
Create Your Resume
- Keep your resume short and to the point. Unless you have extensive experience or a lot of highly relevant work experience, the general rule is one-page maximum.
- A quick google search will yield many examples of many different types of resume templates.
- Google Docs is a good place to start. Open Google Drive, select “From a template” from Google Docs, select any resume from the choices listed.
- Employers appreciate originality, so while it’s helpful to refer to a professional resume template, don’t follow it rigidly. You can add or change the template anyway you like!
- Make sure you use white space and bullet points to emphasize your qualifications. Hiring managers may overlook you if they can't easily spot your information while scanning.
- Use bold and italics to emphasize keywords or skills. Be careful to not overuse this technique, though.
