General Education Requirements

Associate's Degrees and Bachelor's Degrees consist of two main components:

  • General Education (GE) classes
  • Major classes

GE courses include courses in English, Mathematics, Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences,  Physical and Biological Sciences, and Lifelong Learning.

It is recommended that you review the following GE plans and select the appropriate one to follow.

GE Patterns for Summer 2025 Only

The following three general education patterns will be effective for Summer 2025 only. If you begin at Foothill College in Summer 2025 and maintain catalog rights, you can use one of the three general education patterns below

Associate Degree GE Pattern

This is the pattern followed by students planning to earn an A.A. or A.S. degree from Foothill College.

Cal-GETC Pattern

The California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC) is the singular lower-division transfer pattern beginning Fall 2025 for students who are interested in transferring to the California State University (CSU) or the University of California (UC) system. For students who are completing an Associate’s Degree for Transfer (ADT), a full Cal-GETC certification is required.

GE Options for Transfer

CSUGE Pattern Summer 2025 Only

For Summer 2025 only, CSUGE Breadth will be an effective pattern for continuing students who have maintained catalog rights through continuous enrollment.

IGETC Pattern

For Summer 2025 only, IGETC will be an effective pattern for continuing students who have maintained catalog rights through continuous enrollment.

Note: Some majors, such as engineering, physical and natural sciences require extensive major preparation requirements in which case, IGETC is not recommended for these majors.
